ACTION CALL: F309/24/1 pH Boost

Challenge: To identify natural materials, that can be incorporated into a product to provide a phased or pulsed delivery to ensure constant “pH boost”.

Client: Global FMCG manufacturer

Background: In the product, the delivery of flavour and active ingredients is enhanced at elevated pH (> pH 8.0). However, as the product is consumed, the environmental (oral) pH reduces the overall pH of the system, which inhibits the perception of flavour and efficacy of the active ingredients.

Goal: The client is looking for solutions to maintain an elevated oral pH during consumption through the identification of:

  • Encapsulated or granulated forms of buffering agents which allow for phased or pulsed delivery to ensure constant “pH boost”
  • Ingredients or technologies that can help maintain an elevated pH (~ pH 8) within the oral cavity during consumption of the product
  • Ingredients and technologies at all stages of technology readiness, from early-stage research and development to commercially available solutions, will be considered
  • Ingredients will ideally be natural/clean label
  • Ingredients will ideally be approved/ or in the process of being approved for use in Europe
