ACTION call: F80/25/2 Edible Electronics

Challenge: To identify opportunities in edible electronics for food and beverage products

Client: Global FMCG manufacturer

Background: Edible electronics has been an area of interest within the pharmaceuticals for a number of years. The benefits are that the delivery of, and the effect of, drugs can be monitored and measured with the body. These materials are then excreted or absorbed by the body. Our client is interested in exploring edible electronics technology to deploy in functional food product applications. Food products designed for functionality are wide ranging, from cognition, focus, hydration, mood, sport, stimulation and well-being. Consumers are increasingly engaging with wearable technology and mobile phone platforms to monitor activity and health including heart rate, glucose monitoring, rest, sleep, to name a few. The secondary effects of functional food consumption, such as metabolite measurement or response quantification are part of the monitoring solution, but edible electronics could open the door to direct measurement of functional ingredient consumption, to enable a more direct correlation to the secondary effectives, and enable intelligent consumption advice.

Goal: The client is looking for edible electronics solutions which can be deployed to detect, measure and monitor functional ingredient concentrations while in use and relay data to a nearby device, such as a mobile phone or smart watch. Technologies of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Functional ingredient detection
  • Functional ingredient concentration measurement
  • Food ingredients which can be deployed in electrical systems
  • Battery free electronic circuits
  • Food ingredients which exhibit electrical activity

As this is a particularly novel application, the client is particularly interested in engaging with academic or research institutes or start-ups active in the emerging arena of edible electronics.
