ACTION CALL: F22/14/1 Plastic Alternatives

A global food and beverage brand is looking at identifying suitable plastic alternatives components for its portfolio if dips and sauces.

With global concerns around non- biodegradable and non-compostable plastic materials and the impact that such materials have on the environment, our client is looking to replace the plastic components it currently uses to package its food products.

This food producers is aware of a number of possible alternatives derived from hydrocolloids, starches and cellulose fibres. It is, however, repeatedly challenged by these materials limitations with regard to water resistance and stability which has prevented a complete transition.

The primary ‘pain point’ is presented when the products undergo the critical food-safety step of High Pressure Processing (HPP) which requires the filled containers to be submerged in water. The steps requires a greater degree of water-stability than the current alternative packaging materials possess. The next generation of plastic alternatives needs to be identified, which are suitable for this desirable preservation technology.

Plastic Alternatives

The key technologies and ingredients of interest must be:
  • Food grade.
  • Water resistant.
  • Bio-degradable.
  • Compostable.
  • Able to withstand HPP.
  • Can be formed into a variety of shapes and size to hold sauces and dips.

Responses

Commercially available solutions and early stage developments are of equal interest for this project.
